3A – My Entrepreneurship Story

I think I’ve always had a bit of an entrepreneurial “spark” but just never realized it at the time, even as early as being a young kid in pre-school. Thinking back to one of my earliest memories, one of my favorite shows to watch was Ed, Edd n Eddy, a cartoon show about three kids coming up with business “schemes” in their Cul-de-sac neighborhood to earn money. As a fun past-time, I tried to emulate the same thing by coming up with my own “businesses”. One was where I would pretend to open up my own video game store similar to GameStop where I would stand behind a speaker, lay out my GameBoy and Nintendo 64 games and force my family to “buy” the games and give me money.

I would first be exposed to the real world of entrepreneurship as a freshman in high school when I met one of my closest friends. His parents opened up a craft brewery business, the first of its kind in our small hometown, that became an instant overnight success. Being able to personally see all the research and hard work they put into their business and still be humbled enough to give back to our community is a big inspiration.

There are many reasons why I am enrolled in ENT3003. First, another friend of mine from home who also attends UF suggested this course to me as we are both business majors. Second, entrepreneurship is something I’ve always been interested in and I want to explore the field a lot further. As I am the first in my family to go to college, I came to UF with very limited knowledge about the foundations of entrepreneurship and business in general. I believe I’ll learn a lot out of what this course has to offer and the tools necessary to start a business and perhaps some ideas of what kind of business it may be. Third, as mentioned before, my buddy’s family business has been a real big inspiration. It taught me that someone like me from a small town with limited resources can turn a simple idea into a huge success.

  1. Bernard,

Wow, I think that's really interesting that your entrepreneurship instincts came out when you were young. Just like you would pretend to sell your video games, I used to pretend to sell my Hot Wheels when I was younger. That's also really neat that you got to experience first hand your friend's family owned business. I've had friends whose families have opened up unsuccessful businesses and it really shows how hard it is to start your own company.

  2. Bernard,

I think its really cool that you stated two different aspects of your life and experiences that attributed to an interest in entrepreneurship. I was always really inspired seeing local businesses startup in my community and then being successful. I worked at a family business in high school that ended up being a massive hit, and I really gained valuable experience seeing the company grow and how it happened.

  3. Hi Bernard,

I also watched that show haha it was a really good show and you are right especially eddy was always trying scheming and dragging the others and trying to make money. I like how you open this story I think many people can relate, great job. I found impressive that you were able to experience some of the challenges that the entrepreneur world has to offer with your parent friend open their brewery business and is admirable when businesses are able to give back at the community as well. I enjoy reading your post it was very interesting and my feedbacks or improvement for the future is more details into your story. For instance, I would love to know when they started making profits and how did they give back to the community. Great job!
